Not a bad way to start the season. A nice 3 pound + Largemouth Bass.  My wife thought this one was large, well it is but what it is not is 8lbs or 22 inches.
Think of this fish 3 times larger and longer, then we would be describing what we are after.

Dramatically downsized my lure selection to only those lures which have previously helped me a catch a 5 pound bass or larger.

Now I carry a small satchel instead that huge safe I used to call a tackle box.  Lugging that through the bushes, difficult, new one feels like you are on “Bass Patrol”. Amazed when it was time to lead how rapidly everything packed up.  Much more silent so increased Stealth.  No heavy plastic clanking, just a small burlap satchel silently touching down on the ground as the first presentation is selected, adjusted and casted to the first target.

Early in the year, new line that you need fresh to fight the big fish but the flip side is you have to fish it a few times to take it to the prime “just broken feel”.  As a bait-caster you could suffer some backlash if you are not very careful. I did and it is a drag.  Once you get accustomed to a new lure on a rod all the knobs are dialed in and you can cast for distance and accuracy without trepidation.

One reel out of commission due to electing to answer a call while fishing…..that’s okay I have 2 in reserve already cleaned and spooled so we cut one off, place the new reel on and tie the lure to the line.   Then I’ll still have 2 more backups, in the future I’m considering taking a back up reel so if a certain reel run foul but the rod is ideal for the presentation that day I’ll put the new reel on that special rod and just keep on throwing strikes.

Coming next results from the rest of the crew and Master David weighs in with his prediction of when I will have my first Trophy Award Fish of this year.

Master David says “by the start of April” – last year it was March 5th, so do I have a non-believer in the house or does he realize how challenging what we are discussing actually is ?

Putting myself in good position with good presentations on great water so it is a matter of time until Ms. or Mr. “Big” decides to challenge my skills and I look forward to putting my thumb on that ones tongue.

With Warmest Regards,
